There are so many aspects that make up theatre and require many people's various and creative talents in order for it to even exist. In order for a theatrical production to take place, it needs a director, who then needs actors and a tech team... I can go on and on, but I think that you get the drift.
Theatre can be used in many ways... to send a message, purely entertain, or express something new and abstract... there are endless possibilities in which theatre can be used creatively. I believe that's why I love it so much.
A famous playwright I like, Samuel Beckett (known for using the theme of Absurdism in his works) , used theatre in a creative and abstract way. My junior year of high school I was cast in one of his works called, "Play".
"Play" consists of three identical grey funeral urns on stage facing the audience. The urns contain the main characters. In the middle urn is a man. To his right is his wife (also known as W1) and to his left is his mistress (also known as W2). At the beginning and end of the play, a spotlight picks out all three faces and all three characters recite their own lines. The effect is unintelligible. The play though, is basically made up of short, occasionally fragmented sentences. One character speaks at time and only when a strong spotlight shines in their face.
This was a creative experience for me as an actress because I had never acted in that type of style before. We could not be expressive with our faces because the whole show was supposed to be mundane and abstract at the same time... Our audience had never experienced a show like we had put on that year. It was different and caught the attention of the audience. This was such a cool experience for me because I had to learn to be expressive with my voice, but not with my face, which goes against many contemporary theatre works.
